How Motion Carries Us

Last week we explored how stillness encourages wholeness. This week we turn to the outward movement, the energy of becoming, expansion, and expression that helps inner potential take outer form.

Many traditions call this yang. Healthy yang feels clean, clear, warm, and connected. It is responsive. It can pause.

Too much yang is reactive and hard to interrupt. It says, “I have to keep going. I can’t stop. I’m behind.”

Too little yang grows quiet and withdraws. It says, “I can’t. I don’t have the energy. Even starting feels like too much.”

In our Inner Oasis classes, we sometimes describe healthy yang as the fountain rising from the wellspring. It helps us move toward what matters without driving ourselves into the ground or losing momentum altogether.

A simple check-in:

If you’d like to assess your current yang energy, rate it with these questions: 1 for rarely, 2 for sometimes, and 3 for almost always.

• How easy is it for me to be responsive?

• How easy is it for me to pause?

• How easy is it for me to move toward something that matters without forcing?

• How often do I feel pressured?

• How often do I talk over others or find it hard to listen?

• How often do I feel I cannot stop because too much depends on me?

• How often do I feel I do not have enough energy to begin?

• How often do I put things off because they feel like too much?

• How often do I withdraw when something asks for action or engagement?

As you look at your numbers, notice which group scored highest. That will often show whether your yang is tending toward balance, overdrive, or depletion.

Last Friday, Joe and I had our first private archery lesson — and yes, those are our arrows near the bullseye. I had been sitting with the image of an archer all winter as a symbol for moving toward goals with clarity and grace.

What I discovered in practice was that hitting the bullseye requires a clear alignment between where the mind sees the target and where the body is actually pointing. That alignment is part of what healthy yang feels like.

What do your numbers tell you about where you are right now?

They may help you see where you’re feeling supported, strained, or depleted. Sometimes just seeing the pattern a little more clearly can shift the way we meet it.

I’d love to hear what you notice as you reflect on this.

With love,
Candice
