Listening Through Support: The Earth Element

How do you feel as you think back to childhood days basking in the summer sun on the grass or the pure delight of making snow angels in winter?

We seem to have an instinct to return to the Earth and allow it to support us. Children already know this. They just lie down.

In recent weeks, we have explored the Breath of Life as it flows through the five elements. Each element reveals something about the rhythms that sustain us. Through the Earth Element, we experience both our physical substance and the support its slower rhythms provide.

Eventually, every rhythm needs a place to land.

Breath opens into movement. Movement sparks action. Action deepens into flow. With the Earth element, we come fully into form. We feel our bones, our feet beneath us, and the shape and boundaries of our bodies.

Yet, coming fully into form is not the end of the rhythm.

There comes a time of fulfillment, followed by a pause, a shift, a turning. What was created completes itself and gradually returns to the stillness from which it began.

Tune in to the deeper tide.

Find a comfortable position and bring your attention to the points where your body meets the ground or chair. Notice the weight of your bones, the contact beneath your feet, and the steadiness of your body in space. Notice the support that is already here. Notice what becomes easier to feel.

Stay in this awareness for a while without trying to change anything.

You might begin to notice subtle movements within the stillness — a shift in pressure or weight, a sense of expansion or settling, a small change in posture, temperature, or muscle tone. You might feel an impulse to move that arises naturally.

Follow what you feel.

If a movement arises, allow it to unfold. Notice when it feels complete, and then linger with whatever follows. This might be a release, a downward shift of weight, a settling in the tissues, or a moment of quiet before another impulse emerges.

These subtle cues can be easy to overlook. Yet with attention, we can begin to recognize these slower rhythms moving through us.

What do you notice when you follow the movement all the way through?

Love,
Candice
